Defend warns the world to pay special attention to the  latest Elon Musk announcement on Starlink and its very real implications for global democracy, free speech and White House accountability?Jason Tanner, the News Commentator and Founding Director of Defend considers potential dangers ahead. The Defend Campaign for Fairer Free Speech and Democracy is urging legislators in the USA and democratic systems globally, to road test national security.

Defend, which originated in the UK was one of the first organisations to spot the initial publication and then the significance of  a seminal posting appearing this week on the social media platform X owned by billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk. The posting marks a change in tone and style to recent narratives from this particular, long-standing 'mouthpiece' profile and it points to a strengthening of Musk's involvement in U.S & global politics. The Doge profile has an opaque identity but analysis reveals it acts like a  'spokesman' for Elon,.

The posting, which is headed 'Breaking News', states "Elon Musk refused to let Ukraine use Starlink for attacks inside Russia."  and is published curiously with an image of  Musk in an assertive, leadership style stance in front of the Ukrainian flag with Starlink written on it

Elon Musk has had well documented, priceless and privileged access to the  White House and the U.S President, Donald Trump. Any other leading industrialist, would bite their hand-off to get such access. Why not go back in time and imagine Henry Ford. Such access has a value  far higher than  any salary that  Trump and Musk supporters proudly say they never receive as if they are charitable servants of the American people. 

"It's incredible that an unelected, unaccountable, very rich man who strategically owns a global communications satellite system through #SpaceX, a major social media platform and who enjoys privileged access to the #WhiteHouse can potentially influence the outcomes of war at the flick of the communications switches that he owns. It would be equally incredible to think he would not have consulted with Donald Trump, because that would then suggest Trump has in effect lost control and become a puppet, or the USA has become lawless. Without conventional and consistent clarity from the Trump administration, it's now not so hard for people to conclude where Trump's allegiance actually lies in terms of support for the undemocratic, communist-style Russian leader, Putin." Speculation remains rife.

Despite Trump's documented flakiness on this, I'll join most other less flaky observers in the world to say without on my part that it was Putin who ordered the current and illegal attack on Ukraine which is internationally recognised as a sovereign state since the demise of the Soviet Union. Originally 'spun' to be a special operation by Putin, a ten year old child playing with soldiers could probably define it as a full blown and very wasteful war in terms of the many dreadful tens of thousands of deaths that should never have happened. 

Defend is worried that while Musk's stated reason for denying assistance to Ukraine was to shorten conflict, his stance lacks credibility & consistency and raises many questions on international governance.  

The #UnitedNations is increasingly looking like being as useful as a chocolate tea-pot with core members of its veto-wielding security council involved in questionable activities involving not only Ukraine but Gaza, Iran and Venezuela to throw in a few random ideas. The rest of the member nations may need to take unprecedented action to get the UN back on course to make its purpose meaningful as a representative of the global population it should protect and the peace it was meant to embrace.

Musk's direct decisions can now affect global politics without any declared oversight by anyone, let alone the electorate of the U.N or any nation, which in his case, by default, must be the USA where he holds citizenship.

The following can no longer be glossed over. Musk's U.S based Starlink provides broadband Internet service in approximately 160 countries and territories. Starlink also accounts for approximately 75% of all active maneuverable satellites in Earth orbit .  Blended  with ownership of X and the development of Grok AI, there's a clear imbalance in power due to money. We may all be born and ultimately die as equals but a baby born into poverty will have no chance of being heard or representing his nation to put things right and to create a fairer world.

A widely respected news agency investigated an earlier intervention in the Ukraine-Russian war  by Musk in July 2025. This needs to be revisited.  In an article published by Reuters it noted that at the very moment Ukraine was making inroads into the Crimea, satellite services used by the  Ukrainian military  were switched off "Soldiers panicked and drones surveilling Russian forces went dark." 

The Reuters investigation notes: "Musk’s order, which hasn’t previously been reported, is the first known instance of the billionaire actively shutting off Starlink coverage over a battlefield during the conflict. The decision shocked some Starlink employees and effectively reshaped the front line of the fighting, enabling Musk to take “the outcome of a war into his own hands,” 

What can we conclude about the future?

There are three possible conclusions as far as I can see . Firstly, the world's wealthiest man through his strategic acquisition of communications systems 'can do what he likes without sanction'. Alternatively he acts with the full blessing of Donald Trump's administration or others. Finally,  Donald Trump has lost control as actual leader of the USA.  But either way and now in all seriousness, is the ground being laid to 'Hail  President Elon Musk' ? (not necessarily as a  conventional  President as  currently permitted and defined by a seemingly vulnerable Constitution).

The Trump administration has been full of surprises ever since the second term launched by firing executive orders like a machine gun. The target, whether intended or not , was the American people who like much of the rest of the world , simply couldn't keep up, as if rabbits in headlights.

If trump was so able to fast-track an unelected entrepreneur into sensitive work at the White House then I don't think there's much to stop  Musk assuming Presidential power despite the constitutional insistence that you have to be born in the USA,  which he was not (born in South Africa).

To my mind, the sanctity and protection of the Constitution has been tested close to breaking point under Trump.  I'm also not entirely sure what prevents an American-born individual not being used as a figure-head puppet President  for another person? There are claims he had the power to swing the 2024 election in Trump's favour. He was also able to set up the equivalent of a Tesla  car showroom in front of the White House at an early stage of Trump's 2nd term.

I've no idea what allows this so blatantly in the USA. Can you imagine the CEO of EasyJet  or Dyson receiving the equivalent, highly public one-to-one privilege with either the King or Prime Minister of the UK at the front of Buckingham Palace or Number 10 Downing Street? For the moment I'll simply suggest 'never-say-never' to some form of a 'President Musk 'at some time in the current poltical climate  in the U.S

A  flick of satellite switches or those in charge of social media can now determine access and delivery of #freespeech and also calls into question the future of elected democracies .

We can no longer ignore, without action, the joint crusade of Trump and Musk in attempting to silence established media that's been deliberately lumped together and given the derogatory term of legacy media. Despite being portrayed as villains with the cunning abuse of the words "fake" and "truth" , they actually epitomise a range of healthy free speech trying to defend the people from political corruption. There's no logic in censoring these outlets in favour of social media platforms such as X which are undoubtedly much easier for oligarchs to manipulate through algorithms. Both should co-exist and neither shut down or sued with crippling lawsuits that put a heavy price on free speech. Musk's X gives an illusion of free speech but it's a critically insincere illusion presented to its users as mounting evidence reveals.

And the final bit of the road to becoming President Musk revolves around Grandpa's  old-time expression, 'Knowledge is Power' . It doesn't take the rocket-scientist that Elon is not to realise that Elon's long-abused 'AI baby' known as Grok potentially plays an important role in returning communities to a more feudal, pre magna carta environment where the sanctity of democratic processes starts to dissolve along with genuine fairer free speech originally intended to be owned by the people. "All hail, President Musk."
